Channel 5's Suzi Perry from the gadget show's Double Take.

Two Superwide Digital Prints produced by Pyramid Digital/Jumbocolour Ltd on the Scitex Xljet 3 to the size of 10 metres wide by 17 metres in length on Frontlit PVC Vinyl, manufactured in 3 metre wide strips and welded together on the Miller Weldmaster to give the finished articles.

Once produced these were then taken and hung from the side of the Millennium Point Building in Birmingham City Centre to show the difference between the two camera processes of normal film photography and digital photography.

The reason for this exercise was that Kodak had announced that they were going to stop producing film camera and concentrate on the digital camera side of their business.

North One Television, the makers of “The Gadget Show for Channel Five (The show goes out on Monday nights at 7.30pm, this is then repeated on Wednesday morning at 9.30am and then again on Friday nights at 11.30pm).

The show reviews all the latest and greatest gadgets and technology and wanted to assess if digital was truly better than film, so they devised a series of tests.

One of these tests was to take a studio photograph of one of their presenters, Suzi Perry, on a film camera and a digital camera, blow the images up to a gigantic size and see which looked the best.

At 150 centimetres x 101 centimetres (6x4) the images look very close but they wanted to be able to see if digital could look as good as film on a huge scale.

To do this North One Television used a professional photographer to take the images. He used a Nikon F60 film camera and a Fuji S2 digital camera, these cameras are very closely matched. They used the same Nikon 35 – 70 Zoom lens on each camera to make the test as fair as possible.

The images produced were then couriered off to Pyramid Digital for the production of the Superwide digital Prints part of the test.
